“I have a boyfriend”

A friend posted this article yesterday and I thought it was interesting. Well-written and thought-provoking, it raises some interesting points about social interactions, gender (in)equality, and the bar scene.


My favourite quote (which isn’t from the article, but the Tumblrsphere):

Male privilege is “I have a boyfriend” being the only thing that can actually stop someone from hitting on you because they respect another male-bodied person more than they respect your rejection/lack of interest.

It’s too true. It was strange to read since it points fingers directly at me – that is my go-to line to shake randoms. I’ll have to start rethinking it. Also, let’s reiterate it here, since it can’t be said too many places or too many times: my body is not public property because I am female. I’ve had my waist ‘innocently’ grabbed too often – once was enough – by strangers. Personal space is a real thing. Respect it, regardless of what genitalia the involved parties have
