…Is my new TV show! Netflix has done it again. After its award-winning, addictive, and highly intelligent take on House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black has a completely different feel with the same level of quality. The lifted restraints of weekly air dates makes the plot and editing of the seasons air tight and the result is more coherent, consistent, and intelligent series.
SO SO good. I’m on episode 7 and am loving it so far. It is surprisingly light and funny for a show about going to prison. Created by Jenji Kohan (who also created Weeds) the series focuses on Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling (who really reminds me of Katy Perry when she acts?), a well-to-do engaged “WASP” who was launching a line of luxury soaps with her best friend before an old deed comes back to haunt her and she is sentenced to 15 months in prison.
An ensemble cast of other inmates (you’ll recognize Laura Prepon of That 70’s Show), creepy guards, and Piper’s fiancé, played by Jason Biggs
as Jim Levenstein, make for an extremely addictive series. Emotional adjustments, the hierarchy and social code of prison, race, homosexuality, trans-sexuality, disability, abuse, and gender are dealt with poignantly and with humor. The series also reveals the selfish nature of people in an individualistic society and, underneath all the laughs, has a lot to say about the human condition, relationships, and love.
I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new show to watch!
